Just in time for the 2011 SXSW Music Festival, AOL has partnered with T-Mobile to launch a free Android app, Play by AOL Music. Whether or not you're fortunate enough to be in Austin right now, with Play, AOL Music and T-Mobile users can listen to over 100 tracks from SXSW and live stream SXSW's concerts in real-time.
In addition to accessing existing libraries on their phones, users can tune in to Spinner's "MP3 of the Day" and indulge in full-length album previews, dubbed "CD Listening Parties," made available one day before final release. If you're looking to update your album art, a partnership with Rdio enables customers to use their own images to share tracks: 30-second previews for general users or full tracks for Rdio subscribers.
Perhaps the primary reason to click play is the app's social DNA. Sharing songs in AOL Play is like posting a status update in Facebook. You can follow friends or share what's in your ear buds via a real-time feed; social network integregations allow you to post directly to Facebook or Twitter without leaving the app. When it comes to your inner circle, you can "Like" or comment on friends' posts. There's also a notification system to help you keep tabs on how friends are responding to your posts.
Android users can download the app for free. AOL claims to be also developing for the iTunes App Store, but for now, iPhone and iPad users will have to hit pause for Play.
